Fueltrade Launches A Nationwide Campaign On LPG Safety Domestic users Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) are receiving a series of education on the safe usage of LPG.

The public education is part of an intensive nationwide campaign initiated and spearheaded by Fueltrade Limited with support from the National Petroleum Authority and the Ministry of Energy. The launch of the LPG safety campaign comes at a time when LPG-triggered fires have become rampant in the country. The most recent gas explosion occurred in Ashiaman, a densely-populated –suburb of Accra which left six people dead and more than a dozen people injured. Mention can also be made of the gas explosion which occurred in Kumasi, Agbogbloshie and other parts of the country. The causes of these fires have been largely blamed on human errors, however, Fueltrade Limited believes that educating users and handlers of the products is one sure way of reducing or eliminating these incidences of LPG fires.

The launch of the LPG safety campaign took the form of radio and television interviews in which the audience were sensitized on some safety tips on the usage of LPG. Domestic users were sensitized on the need to check the integrity of the cylinders they purchased by inspecting manufacturer's date, weight etc., since cylinders lose their integrity after ten years. All other accessories such as regulators, hose and valves must be inspected periodically and where in doubt, contact an LPG retail station for customer support. According to the Director of Sales and Marketing of Fueltrade Limited, Sam Amoah, the campaign runs from now till the end of the year, with intensity during the Christmas festive seasons where households are known to use more of LPG. Mr. Amoah believes this education will help improve the public's appreciation of the sensitive nature of the product and desist from acts that can trigger LPG explosions. For his part, Yaro Kasambata of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) called on the public to purchase made in Ghana cylinders since its quality is guaranteed. According to him, used imported cylinders have been banned and its quality and integrity cannot be assured.

The National Petroleum Authority commends the initiative by Fueltrade Limited to sponsor this country-wide education. The campaign takes three forms; thus television and radio interviews, video documentaries and newspaper announcements. The education is also targeting commercial drivers who are having a stint with LPG these days to be mindful of the all safety issues with regards to the conversion from petrol to LPG. Taxi drivers should desist from installing domestic cylinders into their commercial vehicles since it lacks all safety accessories designed for cars. So far, feedback gathered indicates a massive public interest in the matter of safety and are urging the campaign on. In the coming days, radio jingles and TV messages will be rolled-out as part of the campaign.

Fueltrade Limited is Ghana's leading importer of LPG into the country and one of the ten licensed Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs) in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry.
